What is montmorillonite?!
Montmorillonite, a clay mineral from the smectite group, derives its name from Montmorillon in France, where it was first discovered. This mineral is classified under the phyllosilicate group of minerals.
The structure of montmorillonite is layered, with each layer consisting of two silica tetrahedral sheets enclosing an aluminum octahedral sheet. A distinctive feature of this mineral is its significant expansion upon contact with water, attributed to the absorption of water molecules between its layers.
Montmorillonite is noted for its high cation-exchange capacity, which renders it valuable in a variety of industrial applications, including leather production, polymer and latex products, paint and resin formulations, and the paper industry. Additionally, it serves as a toxin binder and carrier in livestock feed and finds use in agricultural practices.
The absorbent properties of montmorillonite also make it a component in certain cosmetics and skincare products. Its diverse applications and valued physical and chemical properties are particularly notable when the mineral is purified and subjected to physical and chemical modifications.
Montmorillonite applications
These are some of known application for MMT
Detergent/ softener
It can be used in laundry detergent and fabric softener as a natural
alternative to synthetic additives, as it can absorb odors and remove stains while also softening
fabrics.
Cosmetics
It is used in many cosmetic products, such as facial masks and body scrubs, due to its ability to absorb impurities and toxins from the skin.
Animal feed
It is a pellet binder that can be added to animal feed to improve digestion and absorption of nutrients
Polymer and Latex
Montmorillonite’s sheet-like structure disperses in polymers at the nano level, enhancing mechanical properties, gas barrier, flame retardancy, and heat resistance.
Paint and Resin
Montmorillonite, with excellent swelling and thickening properties, enhances film-forming, spreadability, and prevents dripping in water-based paints and inks. We provide refined Montmorillonites..
Paper
The paperboard industry now uses closed white water systems to reduce wastewater costs, leading to accumulated dissolved materials, deteriorating water quality, system contamination, and increased chemical use.
Leather
Beverages
We produce Montmorillonite for clarifying wine and fruit juices like apple, cranberry, and raspberry. It forms a gel in water, stabilizes proteins, and meets specific customer requirements.
Agricultural
Active ingredients in agrochemicals are diluted for efficient application. Montmorillonite and other inorganics, used as carriers, ensure safety, reduce environmental impact, and provide sustained-release.
